| Teaching Ninjutsu in the Dallas metroplex since 1985! |
Authentic Japanese Ninjutsu or Ninpo Bugei was brought to the U.S. by Steve Hayes Shihan. His generosity to the students
in America is well noted by Ralph Severe. He is also thankful to Fumio Manaka Shihan for his
incredible hard work in bringing us the traditional ryuha gata (forms of the schools). Without
these two wonderful men, ninjutsu in America would not have been the same. Other important
Kobujutsu instructors of the Bujinkan who have made a great of impact are Charles Daniel, Bud Malmstrom,
Bill Atkins, Mark O'Brien, Richard van Donk and Jack Hoban.
Traditional Japanese style Ninjutsu classes at the Urban Combative Training are conducted in a relaxed traditional manner. The art is natural and the student is trained to use his or her gross, complex and fine motor skills. These skills are less likely to degrade over time and in a stressful environment. It is of no surprise that Ralph Severe’s classes are hard-core and very structured. Students learn to deal with stress and the conflicts they might encounter in their lives in this wonderful class.
Students wear a black doji "uniform" during indoor training and street clothing during outdoor training. Students provide their own equipment. Classes can be on a variety of Kobujutsu and Ninjutsu subjects from unarmed and weaponry forms to history to meditation to free fighting skills or even stealth and strategy.
Ralph Severe has senior students helping the lower belt grades during every class. All students train together, advanced and beginners. This way the student has an example to follow making it a lot easier to understand the instructions of the teacher.
Video tapes and training booklets are also available to the students.
The ranking system of Ralph Severe's Kamiyama Dojo has a belt system. White “mukyu”(beginner), green “kyukyu, hachikyu, nanakyu”(9-8-7 beginner grades), blue “rokukyu, gokyu, yonkyu”(6-5-4 beginner grades), brown “sankyu, nikyu, ikkyu”(3-2-1 advanced grades) and black “shodan” (1st beginner level), black “nidan” (2nd associate instructor level), etc. belts.
"It is essential that you neither despise nor grasp for either the realm of activity or that of quietude, and that you continue your practice assiduously.
"Frequently you may feel that you are getting nowhere with practice in the midst of activity, whereas the quietistic approach brings unexpected results. Yet rest assured that those who use the quietistic approach can never hope to enter into meditation in the midst of activity."
-- Hakuin, "Zen Master Hakuin"
